Humans of RCL FOODS – Athalia: A big heart, a bigger impact

In the heart of Malelane, where the sugarcane stretches as far as the eye can see, there’s a woman whose kindness and resilience has touched countless lives. Athalia’s journey is not just about personal growth; it’s about lifting others with her. From her work at TsGRO, a joint venture between RCL FOODS and small-scale growers, to the children she has raised and the communities she has nurtured, Athalia embodies what it means to grow what truly matters.

Growing up in a large family – one of twelve siblings – Athalia learned the power of sharing and supporting one another early on. It was a way of life, a lesson in love and responsibility that shaped her into the person she is today. Even now, she carries those values forward, ensuring that those around her, whether at work or in her community, have the support they need to thrive.

Her career at RCL FOODS began in 2008, when she joined what was then TSB Sugar as a Supervisor in the Print Room. Over the years, her role evolved, and she took on new responsibilities, always with an eye on growth – not just for herself, but for the people around her. Today, as a Communications Centre Officer at TsGRO, she is a key link between RCL FOODS and the small-scale growers we partner with, ensuring that they get the support and resources they need to succeed. “I work closely with the growers, and I see firsthand how our partnership helps them step up, take control of their futures, and build something lasting for their families,” she says.

But Athalia’s impact doesn’t stop at work. She has become a pillar of strength in her family, stepping in when it was needed most. When her sister passed away, leaving behind two young children, Athalia didn’t hesitate – she took them in as her own. Through love, care, and financial support, she helped them build a future, and today, one of them is a nurse. “I believe in giving people the chance to succeed, whether it’s my family or someone in the community,” she says. “If you care for others, God will look after you.”

Her commitment to uplifting others extends beyond her family. In her free time, Athalia mentors small business owners, encouraging them to find ways to support themselves and their families. Whether it’s through advice, motivation, or simply being a listening ear, she helps others take charge of their futures. “Sometimes, people don’t need money; they need someone to believe in them,” she says.

Athalia’s passion for helping others is also deeply tied to her work with the Do More Foundation. As a Do More Hero, she dedicates her time to early childhood development (ECD) centres, ensuring that young children receive the care and nourishment they need. She loves cooking and regularly helps feed children, making sure that she does what she can to ease hunger in her community. From organising food drives to spending time with the little ones, she puts her heart into every initiative. “We need to leave a mark wherever we are,” she says. “If a snail moves, you can see the trail it leaves behind. That’s how I want to live – I want my impact to be seen even after I’m gone.”

For Athalia, the journey has never been about personal gain. It’s about lifting others, making a difference, and creating opportunities where none existed before. Whether she’s ensuring that small-scale growers at TsGRO have what they need to succeed, mentoring women looking to build small businesses, or caring for children who need a helping hand, she is a force for good in every space she enters.

“I’ve come to realise that I am strong,” she says. “And the greatest gift I can give is to help others see their own strength too.”

In every sense, Athalia is a woman who grows what matters – for her family, her colleagues, her community, and beyond.
