Richelle Davis: A Story of Grit, Gratitude, and Growth

In October 2023, amidst the grandeur of an ICC Durban event, Richelle celebrated a significant milestone: the attainment of her BCOM Degree in HR Management. On the surface, this achievement may seem ordinary, but delving into Richelle’s story unveils a story of resilience, tenacity, and unwavering determination — shaped by a remarkable individual fueled by gratitude.

Born prematurely in 1981, Richelle entered the world facing adversity. Deprived of vital oxygen in those critical moments, she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, confining her to a wheelchair. Yet today, Richelle’s spirit remains unbroken. “I can’t believe how lucky I am,” she reflects, acknowledging the blessing of a strong mother who suffered no victims, a powerful mind of her own, and the opportunity for a fulfilling life, albeit from a seated position.

Richelle joined the group in 2010 as a receptionist, where her diligent work ethic and positive presence made her a beloved figure among visitors and colleagues. However, she aspired for more so with courage as her compass and encouragement from Daryl Milne to own her own journey, she pursued higher education with determination. Richelle completed a Higher Certificate in HR Management in a year with straight A’s, leading to a bespoke intern programme. Her efforts and hard work lead to her eventual placement in the Learning and Development team.

She found herself reporting into a new manager who had the same belief in her abilities and continues to foster Richelle’s growth. She thanks Charmaine Boschoff, Tasmin Coleman, Barney Khumalo and Tarryn Bennet, amongst many others for their support.

Her journey, spanning 13 years of balancing work, studies, and health challenges, showcases her unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth. Despite facing chronic pain, Richelle remains steadfast in pursuing her dreams and making a meaningful impact in her role as an HR Administrator. Her recent achievement of her BCOM degree is an accomplishment that defied odds and inspired all who know her.

Beyond her job title, Richelle embodies leadership and advocacy for individuals with disabilities, inspiring others to push beyond perceived limits. She serves as a beacon of determination and resilience, reminding us all of the power of gratitude and perseverance in achieving our goals.
