Humans of RCL FOODS – Edgar Mkhatshwa

Born and raised – in the humble surroundings of Kamaqhekeza in Nkomazi in Mpumalanga province, Edgar Mkhatshwa’s journey reflects the resilience and determination that define his character. As the eldest among his four siblings, he carried early responsibilities, navigating the challenging landscape of rural education, often with empty stomachs and makeshift book bags. Yet, these challenges only fuelled his ambition.

After matriculating at Khula Secondary School in 1994, he pursued his passion for nursing, earning his diploma in 2000. Unfazed by many challenges, after gaining work experience in the UK, Edgar pursued further academic heights, earning a B-Tech degree from the esteemed University of Pretoria in 2013.

Today, Edgar stands for professionalism, embodying the roles of a devoted father, loving husband, and stands steadfast in his faith. His tenure at RCL FOODS, commencing in 2013 as a Senior Professional Nurse, speaks volumes of his dedication and expertise.

His journey at RCL FOODS has been marked by continuous growth and learning. He has pursued various programs and qualification, including basic counselling and employee wellness courses, and is thriving with the mentorship of Sister Wendy and the support of his colleagues. Edgar embraces challenges as opportunities for personal and professional development.

Edgar’s envisions a future where he can make an impact beyond the confines of medical care, to supporting employees to make positive behavioural changes and promoting a culture of personal well-being. His ambition to transition into psychology reflects his unwavering commitment to be a catalyst for positive change. Within our Sugar Business, Edgar has pioneered various interventions aimed at improving the mental well-being of his colleagues and assisting employees deal with challenges including depression, substance abuse, traumatic events, PTSD and many others.

Among his greatest trials stands the loss of friends and colleagues during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he formed part of the team caring for thousands of employees. Early in his career he also struggled with the harsh winters of England, where he cared for dementia patients. Yet, through adversity, Edgar emerged even stronger.

Beyond his professional endeavours, Edgar’s vibrant personality shines through. A fan of R&B music and a former sprinter and amateur soccer player, he now finds joy in marathon running. His recent qualification for his first Comrades Marathon epitomises his unbeatable spirit and determination.

For Edgar, life is more than just a journey, it’s a testament to the power of perseverance and positivity. His ultimate goal is to make a lasting impact, enriching the lives of others with every stride. With a contagious smile and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of kindness, Edgar epitomises the RCL FOODS spirit.
