A Taste of Your Future as an Internal Audit Management Trainee at RCL FOODS

We’re giving graduates in South Africa who are interested in the opportunity to develop their unique recipe for success in their professional journey as an Internal Auditor, to become our next Internal Audit Management Trainee!

But what exactly does this mean? What will your days involve? And what could your future look like in this role? Below, you’ll gain insight into the role that an internal auditor plays in the greater business, the essential ingredients we look for in you, the types of projects you’ll work on, and some of the challenges you might face.

The role of internal audit is to provide independent assurance that the businesses risk management, governance, and internal control processes are operating effectively. This can be achieved through objectively assessing the company’s IT and/or business processes, assessing the company’s risks and the efficacy of its risk management efforts, ensuring that the organisation is complying with relevant laws and statutes, evaluating internal control and making recommendations on how to improve.

As our Internal Auditing Management Trainee, we’re looking for someone with the following ingredients to add to the mix:

  • A large scoop of curiosity
  • A big cup of sincere, healthy scepticism
  • Another big cup of great communication skills
  • A dollop of reliability
  • A sprinkle of eagerness to learn and drive to improve
  • A spoon of adaptability
  • A big chunk of willingness to go the extra mile
  • A splash of determination combined with perseverance

Now that you know what ingredients we need you to bring to the table, the next thing you’ll need to do is combine them daily as you work on a variety of projects in the Internal Audit sector. These projects will involve participating in finance, operations and compliance reviews as well as regular discussions with your manager to obtain an understanding of the control environment. You’ll get a taste of process flow mapping and identifying controls and weaknesses, as well as experiencing walkthroughs of various processes. You’ll dip your fingers in data analytics and sample selection, and indulge in the preparation of working papers, compiling information for audit committee reporting and gathering evidence for investigations.

Getting a taste of these kinds of projects will help you create a recipe for success that’s cooked to perfection! Not only this, but your experience will combine into a delicious mix of ingredients that cooks up a successful career, not just a job!

A typical day in your life as an Internal Audit is rather busy, yet exciting. From interaction with different people and stakeholders to individually tackling situations, an internal auditor’s day is full of exploration. It can go from extensive audit planning, and detailed testing, to execution at its best and robust reporting. Travelling to different sites will allow you to establish relationships with different process owners and give you exposure to different working environments. The most exciting part of an auditor’s day is the peer-to-peer communication, discussions and learning about different opinions and ideas that all work together to meet one objective. The sincerity, hard work and determination of an internal auditor in a day is what results in the most applicable and best made audit report.
