Men’s Well-being: Creating spaces where strength includes speaking up
As a business, our impact is rooted in a simple belief: when people are supported, heard, and empowered, they thrive, and so does the business. That is why we continue to create intentional spaces that strengthen connection, encourage openness, and support the holistic well-being of our people. Across our operations, we are seeing a meaningful shift in how men engage, reflect, and grow in the workplace.
For many men, strength has traditionally been associated with silence, endurance, and carrying burdens alone. But that narrative is changing, and it must. True strength is also found in the courage to speak, reflect, and seek support.
At our National Office, the Masterclass Series for Men in the Workplace created structured space for reflection on self-leadership, purpose, emotional well-being, and relationships. Facilitated by external experts, the sessions drew strong participation despite demanding schedules, with feedback consistently pointing to the value of honest, practical dialogue in a safe environment.
Across our Baking operations — including Pretoria West, Rustenburg, Spartan, Bread, Buns and Rolls, Piemans, and Speciality , engagement forums are evolving into deeper spaces of trust. Conversations now extend beyond operations into lived realities: pressure, fatherhood, financial strain, identity, and responsibility. In these moments, men are not only speaking more openly but building stronger connection, empathy, and accountability.
This shift is reinforced in our Pies operations through Bua Ndoda , Speak Up, Man a structured platform that continues to strengthen openness and shared accountability across teams.
In the Sugar Division, this commitment comes to life through Khuluma Ndoda — Speak Up, Man, launched in November 2024. The initiative guided men through a focused journey of identity, responsibility, health, finances, and purpose, anchored by a simple question: “Who am I?”
From this starting point, conversations moved into the realities men carry daily, the pressure of provision, emotional strain, and the importance of health and financial discipline. Sessions on mental well-being normalised seeking support, while health discussions reinforced early detection and personal responsibility.
These initiatives are not isolated efforts. They reflect a deliberate and evolving commitment across RCL FOODS to place people at the centre of how we work, recognising that when we invest in our people, we strengthen our business.
Importantly, this is only the beginning. More interventions like these will have started across our business for our men, ensuring they feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow.
Men’s well-being is not about having all the answers. It is about having the courage to ask questions, share experiences, and support one another without judgment. At RCL FOODS, we are proud to be part of that shift, because when people thrive, performance follows, and that is where real impact is made.
