Humans of RCL FOODS: Byron Christie – A Journey of Growth and Purpose

Byron is another one of our inspiring Humans of RCL FOODS – a leader whose journey reflects the heart of our Purpose: We Grow What Matters. His story is one of resilience, purpose, and the relentless pursuit of making a difference – not just for himself, but for those around him.

Raised in a marginalised community, Byron knows firsthand the challenges that many people in our country face. During his time working in the beverages (alcohol) industry, he would drive past the Cape Flats, where he saw children wandering the streets with alcohol in hand, caught in cycles of poverty, crime, and violence. These experiences made him question his own role and purpose, sparking a desire to align his work with his values and create a positive impact on the world.

Byron knew that in order to feel fulfilled, his work needed to reflect his values. The path wasn’t easy – he spent eight months without a job or income, searching for a company whose purpose aligned with his own. When he came across RCL FOODS, a company committed to growing what matters and feeding the nation, he knew he had found his place. It was more than a job; it was an opportunity to create positive change.

Since joining RCL FOODS, Byron has made a meaningful impact through his work. He started as a General Manager at Sunbake and, through his dedication, was promoted to Operations Executive, overseeing both Sunbake and Sunshine. But for Byron, leadership is not just about the bottom line; it’s about nurturing growth in people. His passion for helping others develop their potential is rooted in his own experience of overcoming adversity. After losing both his parents, Byron became the legal guardian of his younger siblings. He raised them while working full-time and pursuing his studies, all while navigating his own grief.

Byron is deeply committed to uplifting those around him, fostering a culture of mutual support and shared success. For instance, he encouraged and mentored Irvin Makelane, who started as a risk officer in Tzaneen and is now thriving in his role as Distribution Manager after achieving that position last year. He also provided guidance to Charles Mthembu, a Production Manager who was contemplating a change in his career path. Byron coached him to reflect on his past experiences, recognise the opportunities before him, and consider the legacy he could create at RCL FOODS. Additionally, he mentored Wilson Malatji, encouraging him to pursue studies for career advancement; Wilson has since excelled and received a promotion.

Byron’s story is a powerful testament to perseverance. His belief in the potential for change through education, hard work, and purpose-driven leadership has not only shaped his career but has also empowered others to rise above their circumstances.

Today, Byron continues to grow and inspire, both in and out of the workplace. As a fitness enthusiast and drag racing hobbyist, he lives a life that reflects balance and discipline. His conviction remains unwavering – that business, when aligned with values, can be a force for good. In his role at RCL FOODS, he is helping to build a future where everyone can thrive. Through his work, his leadership, and his commitment to growing others, Byron is leaving a legacy that his children – and his community – can be proud of.

His message to anyone reading his story? “With education, hard work, and dedication, you can grow out of marginalised circumstances. You can rise, and you can make a difference.”
